World Building: What Defines Family in Your World?

Family has taken on many new faces over the past few decades. “Traditional Family” units used to include the mother, father, and siblings. In our own society that face is changing. “Traditional Family” often integrates extended family, blended families and many combinations within these units. What will be the “traditional family” in your world?

One thing to consider is the role of the community in your world. Will it truly take an entire village to raise a child in your world? How does the family fit in the societal hierarchy? Just a few things to ponder when building your world – lots of options await you here – let your imagination flow, will traditional family be traditional or will you start a whole new family pod?

A 'traditional' family will always involve Dad, Mom, and Kids - but my books contain other variations, because that's the way the world is now!

Hi Diane - that's exactly right - a "traditional" family today is not necessarily a mom, dad and kids. It could be a grandma and grandson, or an aunt and niece. Blended families. Extended families. Family units are changing in our society - how will things be in books today or 25 years from now?
