Building Believable Magic

Children have been raised to believe in fantasy – Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, Easter Bunny, and fairy tales galore. What is the attraction? Why do we enjoy the fantastical realm? I think one reason is the fairy tale ending, “they lived happily ever after”. These five little words bring a warm cozy, safe feeling. After all, don’t we strive to find our very own “happily ever after” in real life?

In most fantasy stories, there is not an easy magical answer to every trivial problem – true magic needs what all good stories need…conflict. There also needs to be a real chance for the hero of the story to fail, after all, if he can simply magic his problem away, where is the suspense of the story? The reader needs to feel compelled to feel the adventure as they enter the magical realm and join the hero on his magical quest. One sense the author must develop in a work of fantasy is the sense of wonder – stretching your imagination to places it may never have traveled before, then going beyond those limits to expand into the vastness of the “what if”. It stirs feelings within us, a familiar recognition of a realm where anything is possible and you must expect the unexpected. In this world logic is stretched, tested and redefined. Often, along the way the champion will have to face fantastical beings often with their own magical powers and qualities.

In my fantasy series, Kylie (the writer of the group known as the destineers) keeps a journal as a chronicle of the group’s adventures. It is filled with entries about all the magical beings they encounter. Later volumes will address their magical lessons and recounting of the legends they witness in the making. But, for now, those stories are being categorized and recorded by ghost writers in the Cybrarie. This book was so much fun to write and explore the possibilities of the "what if" as a young boy tries to puzzle his way through a weekend with his grandparents. JT loves visiting them, but they seem to have their own secret language. The young boy tries so hard to do everything they ask but hysterical misunderstandings happen all weekend long. Random Thoughts

My passion is ...my family. I can't imagine life without any of them...yes, even the dogs!

My parents always told me ......if you can't think of anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Everyone has feelings and feelings are very fragile. This is a valuable life lesson. Words are important. They can wound deeper than anything you can physically do to a person, the wounds are so deep they are often unseen. I know this is sometimes a very hard thing to remember - life can come at you fast and sometimes words get blurted out, but remember the flip side of that coin is also true - words can also inspire someone and lift them higher than they have ever been before. It all goes back to "it's not so much what you say, as it is how you say it." It is the thought, the feeling and emotion behind the word that gives it so much strength.

My childhood ambition ...To write books! I love to write, to meet my characters and help them tell their stories. I feel like characters in a story need to be multi-dimensional. You need to really know your character, not just in the moment, but on a personal level, what has led them to this moment ~~ how they became who they are and how they react, in order to tell their story well.

My favorite memory ...there are so many to choose from, I couldn't possibly say. I have been blessed. This is very true. I have so many good memories from early childhood right up to now; choosing one to be my favorite would be like trying to select my favorite snowflake~~ they are all so beautiful and unique, how can you possibly choose? Why I write ...it's a great creative outlet. I love to write...many genres...many ideas. I read somewhere that you should, every so often, write something that is outside of your comfort zone ~~ maybe something in a different genre. It tests you and stretches you and gives you a different perspective to look at and write about. What I am reading/watching/listening to ...ahhhh.....that is ever changing (lol).

My first full time job ......was working with autistic and schizophrenic children. That was awesome, life altering. You can really make a huge difference in someone’s life if you just take the time to care and show them you care.

My best moment ...was becoming a mother ~~ how can you possibly top that?....well, okay, my son's graduation was pretty awesome too! I have never felt so much pride before ~ you know how they say you are so full of pride you feel like you could just burst...I had always thought that was an exaggeration, but it's true! My inspiration ...definitely my son. I hope someday to be able to live up the image he has always made me feel that he had of me.

This weekend I had the privilege of seeing Michael Jackson’s performance of
Captain EO at the Walt Disney Studios. It reminded me of what a talented individual he was and the message he always tried to share with his audiences. I have found a copy of the video on you tube – if you have a few minutes I highly recommend watching. The epic song “We are Here to Change the World” is in the 2nd part of the video – As Michael says, “We're on a mission: In the everlasting light that shines - A revelation Of the truth in chapters of our minds: We are here to change the world.”

I love the hope and the message – what a great thought for the New Year.

Auld Lang Syne

At the stroke of midnight many cultures sing the song "Auld Lang Syne." Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind that song and the tradition of singing it on New Years? Early versions of the song came from medieval Scotland... the Gaelic lyrics reflected hope, companionship, and the uncertainty of life. The phrase "auld lang syne" translates literally to "old long ago," and is meant as a nostalgic reference to so-called good old days. The first published version of the lyrics was written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in the 1700s. It wasn't until the 20th century that the song gained popularity as an anthem to the New Year.

That being said, come on…you know you want to join in for a verse or two!

The Day After Christmas Lament

Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house,
every creature was sleeping, even the mouse.

The toys were all broken, their batteries dead,
Santa passed out with some ice on his head.

Wrapping and ribbons covered the floor,
while upstairs the family continued to snore.

And I in my T-shirt, new Reeboks and jeans,

went into the kitchen and started to clean.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the sink to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

tore open the curtains and threw up the sash.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a little white truck with an oversize mirror.

The driver was smiling, so lively and grand,
the patch on his jacket said US POST-MAN.

With a handful of bills, he grinned like a fox,
then quickly stuffed them into our box.

Bill after bill and still they all came,
whistling and counting he called them by name.

Now Dillard’s, now Broadway, now Penny’s and Sears,
here’s Levitz and Target and Macy’s….all here.

To the top of your limit, every store, every mall,
now charge away, charge away, charge away all!!

He chuckled and whistled as he finished his work,

he filled up the box, then turned with a jerk.

He sprang to his truck and he drove down the road,
driving much faster with just half of a load.

10 Rules of Holiday Eating

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It’s rare.. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It’s a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think.It’s Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you’re never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Re-read these tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

Remember this motto to live by:“Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO-HOO what a ride!”

12 Days of Christmas

From 1558 until 1829, Christians in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality, which the children could remember.

-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

This is an award given by children’s and young adult bloggers for books they consider to be of literary merit with kid appeal. It is quite an honor to be nominated. Scrolling through the fiction picture book category I see such prestigious author nominees as: Lemony Snicket, Jeff Foxworthy, Julie Andrews, Neil Gaiman and fellow 4RV author Beth Bence Reinke. I consider myself very fortunate to be nominated with these and so many more talented authors and offer sincere congratulations to all the nominees.

Who's Your Favorite Literary Fictional Character?

When you are reading a novel, what characters inspire you? Do you revel in the security of a favorite (although possibly cliched) stereotype? Are you looking for a hero - someone to place on a pedestal and revere? Maybe you prefer someone you can more easily identify with, a character that is real and flawed? Perhaps you like to pep up your characters to be a notch above the normal average Joe.

I write books for children through young adults. Lately my focus has been in the genre of fantasy. Look at some of the more popular works throughout time - Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Alice as she journeys through the looking glass, and, of course, one of this generation's popular boy wizards - Harry Potter. What do these timeless characters have in common? The authors of each of these works have brilliantly developed characters their audience can truly embrace. Characters that step off the page, grab their reader's hand and take them on an adventure they won't forget. Who are some of your favorite characters in literature today?

A Writer's Journey

As fiction writers we make an incredible journey. It begins with envisioning a book concept and developing believable characters with precisely the right voice for telling the tale. We nurture the concept and characters and tweak them till they are just right. After much preliminary work we begin the actual art of storytelling - putting it all on paper, hopefully in a manner that engages our readers bringing them happily into the fictional world we have created - immersed and enthralled in the tapestry of the story threads. The tale is written, rewritten, polished and edited until we feel it is finally ready for submission to the ever elusive publisher.

The task of researching publishers that are looking for the particular type of work we have created, coming up with a "can't miss" marketing plan, querying said publisher and nervously awaiting their response is an arduous task. Will our story be embraced, or will we receive the infamous letter of rejection? Anxiously we wait to hear - it can be days, weeks, even months before the verdict of the publisher's interest or decision to pass is made known to us. The wait is grueling. If the publisher is interested, will a partial manuscript or the entire manuscript be requested? Once again, you find yourself playing a waiting game, repeatedly checking your mailbox and hoping for the offer of a contract. Only time will reveal the publisher's final decision to embrace your work or decline it leaving you to begin the publishing search again.

Finally, your labor of hard work and love has been accepted by a publisher...and there are more edits and polishing that take place. At long last it is beginning to look like your dream is about to become a reality. Soon you will be able to hold your book in your hands, and, more importantly get it to your readers - the fans that will embrace your story and clamor for the sequel.

Meet Author Christy Condoleo: There are so many sides to a Gemini and fortunately she is the epitome of them all. Christy expressed her creative side from the time she had aspirations of starting her own comic in elementary school. She began writing for the school newspaper with interviews, poems and even drawing the cover for the Christmas issue.

Christy wrote on and off for a few years before joining the United States Air Force. Even in the military she dabbled in writing by creating a step by step continuity book which was bench marked by other squadrons on the base and won her an award certificate. After her six years with the military she joined the Long Ridge Writer's Group.

Christy designs and makes her own promotional materials to promote her books.

Christy has written four books: Gasgeil's Bravery, a 32 page picture book, Tyme's Hope, a fantasy for young readers, Spirit Feathers, Volume I , a collection of short stories, Fragments of the Key: Eala's Misfit, this is the first of seven books in the Fragments of the Key series.

He absolutely adores his grandparents and is very excited to spend a whole weekend alone with them, but his grandparents have this whole secret language he doesn't seem to understand. After all, how are you supposed to survive a whole weekend alone with them when you do exactly what they say and still end up in so much trouble?!

JT knows he has a fun weekend in store for him - grandma has promised to bake his favorite cookies and grandpa said he was going to take him to a baseball game! He tries hard to follow their requests to a “T” with one disastrously humorous result after another. “Why can’t they just say what they mean?” he wonders. Talk about a failure to communicate! Today’s visit on the If Wishes Were Fishes tour takes us to Beth Bence Reinke’s blog, Beth’s Bookbasket. Beth holds a bachelor's degree in biology and secondary education and a master's degree in nutrition. Using her expertise as a registered dietitian, she writes magazine articles about food, health and nutrition. She has written more than 100 articles and numerous devotionals for publication.

In snippets of spare time, Beth enjoys reading, baking, and watching NASCAR and football. As the librarian for her church, she has the privilege of choosing books to fill the shelves for the adults and children who visit the library.

I go to Blessed Kateri Catholic Church (in Santa Clarita, CA) and I'm involved in our Sunday Preschool program. We call it Little Church. The program works with 3, 4, and 5-year-olds. I help to teach the 3's along with 3 other talented ladies, Shirley Chang, Maureen Dunahoo, and Mary Tesselaar. Every year I help to write the Easter play for the children. In 2009, "The Giving Meadow" was our Easter play.

After I wrote it, I showed Vivian at 4RV. She's also a moderator at Writing.com and I wanted her feedback on the story. She offered it a contract! I was tickled pink. It was a nice, unexpected surprise. I can't thank Vivian (Gilbert Zabel, publisher, 4RV Publishing) for believing in the story and wanting to bring it to life.

"The Giving Meadow" is wonderfully illustrated by Stephen Macquignon. Stephen primarily works in the medium of pen and ink and color digitally. He has had the privilege to work with Director Michael Sporn of Michael Sporn Animation Inc. He is also a monthly contributor for Stories for Children's magazine.

Stephen's children's books with 4RV Publishing include Angeline Jellybean by Crystalee Calderwood and Colors by Dana Warren.

"The First Flag of New Hampshire," by Stephanie, will be released by 4RV Publishing next year. It is a TW/Young Adult story.

This is taken from an article I wrote for Once Upon a Time magazine in 2005. Some of you may relate; some may be too young. I hope all of you enjoy it.

My grandkids call me “Mema.” They’re so cute when they say it. I even admit to having three great-grandkids. That’s okay. I married very young.

My sons and their wives call me “Mom.” I love it. One of my life’s greatest rewards is being a mother.

My husband calls me “Beverly.” Mmm. That’s my name.

I refer to myself as a children’s author.

Some people consider me a senior citizen. I know, because at restaurants they automatically give me a senior discount. Now, I have a problem with that.

Perhaps Robert Browning said it best in his poem, Rabbi Ben Ezra:

Youth ended, I shall try
My gain or loss thereby;
Leave the fire ashes,
What survives is gold;
And I shall weigh the same,
Give life its praise or blame;
Young, all lay in dispute;
I shall know, being old.

I like to think of me as living in my golden years: “The last of life, for which the first was made,” according to Browning. When I was younger, I would not have believed him. But he was on to something. Now, I understand what he meant.

Consider me a recycled teenager worrying about a date for Saturday night, or that algebra test on Friday or puzzled because my best friend has another best friend.

Consider me an adventuresome ten-year-old who still believes in magic and fairy tales, and who loves horses and fishing and decorating a Christmas tree.

Consider me an inquisitive toddler watching a butterfly on a flower, a raindrop racing down the windowpane, or cuddling in my mom’s or dad’s lap while they open new worlds to me through an enchanting book.

Yes, I treasure each memory of growing older. I enjoy every hour of every day God gives me. Which reminds me. Gotta run. My skateboard awaits, along with my character who is teaching me the basics of an Ollie. What’s that, you say? I’m too old! Never.

I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to speak with Beverly and interview her to get some new insights into this captivating historical fiction novel. So, sit back, have a cookie and a cup of tea or mocha frappe or whatever you like and let’s learn a little more about this talented author and the story behind this incredible new story.

NAS: Good Morning, Beverly. I am so excited to have you here with us today. Would you please tell us a bit about your writing background? How did you get started writing for children? What were your earliest influences?

Beverly: Morning, Nancy. Thanks so much for letting me visit you today. My first experience with writing was in the eighth grade when my teacher sent my poem “Stars” to a high school anthology and it was published in Young America Sings. I really no desire to write at that point. In fact, I was married, with children, and teaching before the writing bug bit me. Reading great Newbery winners and honor books with my students and my sons was the beginning of my love of books, especially children’s books. I thought it might be fun to write my own. But my confidence was low, so I took a course at The Institute of Children’s Literature and learned to write for magazines first. To my surprise many of my articles were published in leading children’s magazines. Was I ready for novels? I wouldn’t know unless I tried, so I took another course at the Institute. After many years and many “No thank you” letters from editors, my first book was finally published.

There really were no early influences. No favorite books I read as a child. No one read to me. I simply wasn’t interested in books.

NAS: What inspired you to write this particular book? Is there a story about the writing of this novel that begs to be told?

Beverly: The idea for Caves, Cannons, and Crinolines, Twilight Times Books, came to me on a visit to Vicksburg, Mississippi. I wasn’t that big of a history fan, but touring the military park there and exploring the museum with items dating back to the Civil War, hooked me. We toured one of the Victorian homes and learned about the family that lived there. When I heard about the citizens living in caves for safety during the siege of Vicksburg, I knew I had to write the story, not so much about the war, but about the effect the war had on the women and children.

NAS: How much research did you have to do to bring Lizzie’s story to life?

Beverly: I did a lot of research. At Vicksburg I bought books, both fiction and nonfiction about the siege. I found wonderful journals kept by the women who lived there. Copies of old newspapers helped me learn more about their daily life. I talked to the curator of the museum, who was born and grew up in Vicksburg. University Web sites on the Internet have a wealth of information too.

NAS: Do you start with a character, setting or plot? How do you build your story?

Beverly: It depends on the story. With this one, the setting came first. Then my characters introduced themselves to me. The father is a doctor loosely based on the husband of the woman who wrote one of the journals. I wanted a young girl for my protagonist and Lizzie was perfect.

Usually though, a character speaks to me and the plot develops from the character, what he tells me about himself.

NAS: Who is your favorite character in the story? Why?

Beverly: That’s a tough one. My characters usually become like my children, a part of my life for months. In Caves, I like Lizzie, but I think Nat steals my heart. He’s so simple and yet complicated: he has fears, he’s brave, he’s confused, like most of us in real life. And he cares dearly for his family.

NAS: The book has an unusual title. How did the title come about?

Beverly: I changed the title several times because nothing seemed right. Then I got to thinking, the book’s about caves and cannons, and Lizzie hates her crinolines, so I put them together and the publisher approved.

NAS: Your character, Lizzie, is very strong and inspirational. Is she based on someone or how did you come up with her?

Beverly: Lizzie is pure fiction. She needed to be strong to deal with what lay ahead in the story. She pretty much wrote her own lines.

NAS: What kinds of books are on the shelves of your personal library?

Beverly: A mixture of just about everything from nonfiction (mostly Civil War, Revolutionary War, and Orphan Trains) to adult fiction (Nicholas Sparks, Dean Koontz, Diana Galbadon) to books for teens, such as the Hunger series, the Twilight series, Harry Potter. Books my friends (your Destineers) have written are especially treasured and have a special place on my shelves. I could go on and on. A few picture books, though I usually give them to my grandchildren after I read them. My bookshelves overfloweth. I donate to our local library too.

NAS: What can your fans look forward to next?

Beverly: My next release is Life on Hold, a young adult contemporary, scheduled for summer 2011 from 4RV Publishing. I also have a picture book, Frankie’s Perfect Home, Guardian Angel Publishing, no date yet, and I Live in a Doghouse, mg contemporary, Kate Little Angel Sometimes, chapter book, and Scattered to the Winds, mg historical, all for sometime in the future.

Beverly, thank you so much for being with us today and sharing these insights into your writing and the new book. As always, I wish you continued success and can hardly wait to read the literary treats you have in store for us next!

As anyone in the writing community can tell you, writing conferences are one of the best resources to have the opportunity to work with industry professionals and to learn from experts in the field; they also provide an amazing platform for networking. If there is only one conference you can attend during the year, this one is it. Trust me.

This online convention is an amazing opportunity for writers at all stages of their careers. The goal is to offer you, the writer, the opportunity to enhance and better your craft, to offer the opportunity to make some contacts to get you to that next level all writers seek whether that is becoming published or making new contacts for networking within the industry.

Many writers out there, particularly in this economy, do not have the monetary resources to attend outside conferences, or perhaps they are situated very far and even some may be incapacitated in some ways making it difficult for them to travel. Within the world of the Internet, everything is possible and they offer you this chance to come out, chat with the Presenters, ask them questions and even attend the FREE workshops to be held throughout the week.

Last year there were participants from all over the world. One of the things I really like about the writing community is, as a rule, they are a very giving group. They learn something and share their experience and expertise with other writers. This conference is the creation of award winning author and editor Lea Schizas.

There are worldbuilding classes and how to create and use a magic system for fantasy writers, classes in poetry, horror and romance. Do you write nonfiction? There are classes for you too. There is great representation for virtually all genres.

Secondly, it is online, therefore, it is open 24-7. This gives you the opportunity to network with writers, illustrators, editors and publishers literally from all over the world. Is your book going to be marketed outside the US? What sort of network do you have in place to help market your book overseas? This is a tremendous opportunity to network with international colleagues. Some classes are in a chat format that you must be pre-registered for (and class size was limited in these last year) so you definitely want to register and select classes early. Since these are real time chats, you do need to attend these at their designated times, but the open forums are available 24-7. The facilitator will post the lesson, you post your response (this is the interactive part) and you will get feedback on your post. This is your opportunity to get your query and blurb polished before you submit for publication.

I highly recommend this conference to everyone in the writing community no matter what stage of your career you are in. Another great plus, once your register for the conference you can participate in the year round forum…again, an amazing group of very helpful writers, editors, and publishers sharing resources and encouraging each other in every attempt and milestone! The networking possibilities are amazing. You can be as active as you like, or simply lurk in the background and read the boards as your time permits. Personally, I think you would be missing out not to do the interactive classes. Even advanced writers that have been published many times over find workshops of interest – honing a skill that may need a little boost – or maybe you are toying with the idea of a change in genre for a storyline in the back of your mind. This is a truly great resource.

Number 1, I am honored that Beverly and Ginger thought of me for this award.

Bev is an extremely talented writer, and one of the sweetest women I have ever met. Although we have only “met” on line, I have had the privilege of learning from classes she has taught in the Muse Online Writers Conference and her spot-on insights in the critique group we are both in. She's a wonderful lady, and I consider myself blessed to have met her.
Ginger is an extremely talented illustrator. As a mater of fact, I am honored to have partnered with her in my recent release If Wishes Were Fishes. Her wonderfully whimsical illustrations perfectly complemented the story and I am thrilled to have been blessed with “meeting” her. I hope to have the opportunity to work with her again soon.

1. Family, friends…and a really good story are my passions.

Hi Guys! Brady here. A lot of you know me from the blogs and over at the Cybrarie. I’m one of the Destineers and we had a lot of adventures in the Netherscape. I attend the Greenbrier Academy and we have a lot of really cool classes to help us learn about the fantastical nations that inhabit the Netherscape. Today Bath Boy from In My Bath is here to swap stories. I’ve been telling him all about meeting Firewing, my pet dragon hatchling I found in the Netherscape, and he’s been telling me all about the adventures he has in his bathtub – it must be really magical with all the cool places it takes him.

Childhood Lessons From the Looking Glass

Recenty I found a very interesting article entitled the Winnie the Pooh Guide to Blogging. Once again, this bear of little brain comes through with marvelous pearls of wisdom. And, as we all know, this cannot be an easy feat when your head is full of fluff. (BTW this really is a good article.)

From there my little brain got to wandering through a plethora of treasures from childhood literature contemplating many great lessons I have learned and insights gained.

Dick and Jane taught me to finish what I start and to appreciate a great love of reading.

Nancy Drew taught me to believe in myself. She taught lessons of observation, to use the art of reason and to think things through.

Dorothy Gale (Wizard of Oz) taught me “There’s no place like home”

Augustus Goop (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) taught me not to scarf the chocolate. Oh, okay, fine…the lesson of moderation.

Alice (Alice in Wonderland) taught me that things just get curiouser and curiouser.

Peter Pan taught me to think happy thoughts, and to believe in pixies and the wonderment of childhood...and, whenever you're lost, look to the second star to the right for the magic of NeverNever Land.

Pinocchio taught me dreams can come true.

Cinderella taught me a dream is a wish your heart makes….and that a great pair of shoes can change your life.

And, perhaps two of my favorite lessons:

Dumbledore (Harry Potter) taught me that “it is our choices that show us who we truly are, far more than our abilities”.

And…

Christopher Robin (Winnie the Pooh) taught me to always remember: “You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." Just a thought...

Magical Monday

This is definitely a magical Monday. This weekend I waqs fortunate enough to have been able to preview the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Univeral Studios Florida before Friday's official opening. It was truly amazing. I don't want to say too much and give anything away - but the castle experience is amazing - it really brings the wizarding world to life with you in the middle of it. The wand shop is interactive letting your wand choose you. The shops are built like genuine shops on a small street - not your typical theme park shop. The food is also themed around the wizarding world (the pumpkin juice is yummy!) I will definietly be back at the official opening Friday, and I can't wait!!

When I got home, I was ready to immerse myself into the Netherscape (my current WIP), but a package on the doorstep caught my eye. It was my early copies of If Wishes Were Fishes. It is so exciting to see it has been released early (the last I had heard from the publisher, 4RV Publishing, was an October release) Now comes the time to immerse myself into the magical realm of marketing for the new release. Yes, it is truly a magical Monday.

Magical Monday: Amulets

Amulets were often used for magical protection. They were used both by the living and the dead. Many amulets have been found in Egyptian tombs. These amulets are in the shape of gods, goddesses, animals, objects, parts of the body, etc. and were believed to contain special powers. Many amulets were wrapped up with the mummy. The mummy of King Tut is a good example and many such amulets were found wrapped in his mummy. Many different substances were also used in the making of amulets which included stone, wood, clay, etc. Since certain substances possessed certain powers, it was important to choose the right substance for a specific type of amulet. Magic writing was also considered an amulet and many such types of magical papyrus have been found in tombs. Thus, wearing of amulets during life was the means of seeking the gods protection and help. After death a special protection was also needed.

Amulets are close cousins to the talisman (from the Greek word “telein” which means “to initiate into the mysteries”. These are objects intended to bring protection or good luck to its wearer. These often have symbols, gems, carvings or even words on them to enforce its magical essence.

Magical Monday - The Art of Alchemy

When we hear the word “alchemist” or “alchemy”, we also tend to think of strange and eccentric individuals who toil away in dark laboratories, trying to concoct fanciful potions. But alchemy is much more than just potions or trying to turn metals into gold.

Alchemy is a field where one tries to isolate the essence of something in order to make it better. Jean Dubuis, a modern French alchemist, has compared alchemy to evolution. He has said that “alchemy is the art of manipulating life and consciousness in matter, to help it evolve or to solve problems of inner disharmony”.

Nature is always evolving in such a way that organisms become more complex as the species grows and strengthens to survive in its environment. All living organisms have evolved to their current forms from much more primitive forms. This process takes a very long time – it takes centuries and millennia to see the minute changes that begin to emerge as the species adapts to its changing world. The goal of alchemy is to find ways to speed up this natural process of perfection. An alchemist believes that everything possesses the blueprint for its own perfection, and that it’s the alchemist’s job to find these essences of perfection trapped inside matter and to bring them to light, thus guiding various materials towards absolute perfection.

One of the most well known examples of alchemy is that of turning lead into gold. In the Middle Ages, many so-called alchemists tried to transform lead, a common and inexpensive base metal, into gold, which was considered to be a purer and more valuable metal because it doesn’t react with other compounds. Alchemists believed that they were simply speeding up nature’s job and some of them used this opportunity to get rich and gain favors from the Nobles and rulers of the day by promising everything from gold from lead and unlocking the secrets of the immortals and the essence of eternal life.

Wow, based on these reviews I can honestly say I can't wait to read this one - I am a HUGE fan of the Dresden files! I am really excited about this latest - if you haven't read this series, I really urge you to give it a read.

Wow!! This has been surreal. First and formost, Bobby and I want to thank everyone for their support and votes in this year's Preditors and Editors Readers Poll. The Destineers’ Journal of Fantasy Nations placed 8th in it's category of Sci Fi and Fantasy. With over 100 nominees in the category...we are speechless and humbled and want to reach out to thank everyone for making this possible. We are definitely going to be celebrating over at the Cybrarie !

Next, I received samples of pictures for my picture book: If Wishes Were Fishes. This book is scheduled for release from my wonderful publisher, 4RV, in October of this year. I am sooooo excited!

Worldbuilding Wednesday - Food Resources

Another intrinsic area to keep in mind in your worldbuilding is your food and water source. Something to keep in mind in your world is the more complex the infrastructure and the larger the settlement, the harder it is to feed the people of your realm. Keep in mind you will need a transportation system for taking needed supplies from the area where they are grown or raised to the area where the people will make use of them.

Agriculture refers to all manner of farming and ranching. Both of these areas are very much at the mercy of weather and the elements. The climate may be typically one way, but any adverse conditions will play havoc with the outcome of your food source – this may have some potential bearing on your story line. Think how late rains, flood, hurricane, droughts, hail storms, early freezes all can influence whether enough food has been produced for a family, local community or wherever the crops may be sold. This basic necessity may have some role influencing an element within your storyline.

The availability of a good transportation system may influence the process of feeding your community. Is it a small or large portion of the food supply brought in from other areas? In a setting where the community is totally dependant on the local crops feeding them, a couple of bad years could wipe out the entire community. If, for example, you have a sci-fi setting, a poor crop year could wipe out the population of the community or they may be saved by the timely visit of a transport vessel bringing food and medical supplies.

Crops are grown for two purposes -- to feed humans and to feed livestock which will, in turn, feed humans. Large scale farming (anything beyond subsistence of a single family or small village group) means the crops must have a way to get to market.

Livestock can be thought of us food for the community; however, in a time of drought will the community want to share the water supply on the animals? This may be a concern for the people of your realm.

Hybrids of crop types are not a modern day invention. The earliest farmers quickly saw the use for naturally occurring hybrids offering more lobes per plant for grains, and cultivated those. In fact, the first cultivated plants were carefully selected and grown for better food.

Be careful to double check the crops you intend to raise grow in the type of climate you've created. Also be aware that not all crops were planted in the spring. Winter wheat is planted in the fall, and harvested earlier in the next year. This allows for the growth of two crops in a normal season, but it is risky since a late frost, dry spring, or a number of other uncontrollable factors can ruin the crop.

Environment also dictates whether or not people will have herd animals. Jungle tribes do not. Even if there were some animal they could tame (say wild boars), it would be nearly impossible to keep track of them in the thick growth. At best, the people may have some half tame pigs and perhaps a few goats or sheep in the villages, but large scale herding of any native animal is unlikely to happen.

Horses are still work animals in any ranch setting as well as in places like traditional Amish communities. However, the closer you come to large cities, the more likely they are to make the transition to pets and luxury animals.

Pets are another matter. A group of people living at subsistence level is not going to have pets just to have little furry friends. However, remember that cats and dogs started as workmates, not just companions. Cats, though not in the same class as dogs for workers, were especially good at guarding the precious grain stores which might keep a village alive all winter. They hunted rodents and other small vermin. Dogs, of course, worked well as shepherds and guards.

How can you work something unusual into your worldbuilding? Are there certain foods only avalable to people of a certain class? Are there animals which can only be owned by certain types of people? This is often true in magic-based stories. In the real world, royalty often owned odd animals as a sign of their power. What will the types of pets a household may have tell you about the family? Where will these types of details lead your story and your reader's understandings of the ways of your world?

Magical Monday: Celtic Magic

Every folk group has special traditions with regard to magical practice. To the contrary of trends in modern "occultism" these traditions are not merely window dressing on a universal pattern- the differences reflect real and often profound variations between and among traditions.

In studying the Celtic traditions of magic certain unique themes occur which are worth pointing out. These themes help distinguish the Celtic traditions from others. If these themes are found inspiring, then the Celtic tradition is a place to explore them further in the environment of ideas which will lead the seeker to deeper findings along the same path.

To the Celtic people, magic was a part of life. It was as common as walking or breathing. It encompassed all parts of life and nature.

They saw magic as any thought, act or ritual that influenced change in the energies that surround us. An example of this is creating a blessing on a crop to increase a harvest.
Rituals formed a lot of Celtic magic. It was believed to open doors to the subconscious and creative mind allowing magical energy to flow through. Any outcome was considered a magical response.

In Celtic society gods, deities and elementals were intertwined. Each of these elements in combination with rituals helped to connect to the energy needed for magic.

1. Magic of the Head
NO other tradition, with the possible exception of the Slavic, is more focused on the human head (and brain) as the seat of magical powers. When one reads the ancient Irish tales one becomes aware of the degree to which the Celts were head hunters. The reason for this is that their magical physiology holds that the head is the seat of power- an honor. Hence the ancient Irish were known to eat a portion of a slain enemy's brain. The head-hunting practices of Irish fighters continued until the mid-19th century, when early Irish immigrants to North America fighting for the Confederacy were known to have hunted the heads of Union soldiers. This is without doubt also the ultimate origin of the "jack-o-lantern" the carved gourd familiar in Halloween customs. It is thought by many that the myth of the head of Mimir, which informs the God Odin, is ultimately a Celtic influence.

2. Memory
Mimir means memory- and the exercise of memory in and of itself seems to have a magical importance for the Celts. This is a trait they share with the Aryans of the east. The Druidic training program is said to have consisted of twenty years of learning lore by memory. The exercise of this faculty for its own sake, beyond the ready access to information it provides to the subject is something the Celts seem to have especially appreciated. the ogham system was most certainly one of the practical tools used in this exercise. Poems and stories were among the things memorized.

3. Story-Telling
The stories recited by Celtic tellers of tales were not merely for entertainment- they were also not merely mythic tales in which the traditions of the people were encoded. Stories are actually said to have operative magical effects. It might be said that the hearing of a certain story would bring a number of years of good fortune, but the telling of a story would bring even more. (See Rees and Rees, The Celtic Heritage.)

4. Language and Music
No people seem more Iyrical than the Celts. The linkage between music (harmonics) and language (meaning) is strong. In the lore of magic this reaches its apex in operative techniques by which changes in the environment, or in the human mind, can actually be effected by means of musical strains alone. This is a theory explored by the Pythagoreans, but in the lore of the Celts it appears to have been an ancient traditional operative technique.

5. Inter-Dimensionality
No other traditional lore seems to have a better or more realistic understanding of the magical experience of inter-dimensionality. The regular interaction with the "otherworld" or the "underworld" is a common feature of Irish and Welsh mythic tales as well as folktales from the Celtic cultures. It is from these that the Arthurian legends inherit their "inter-dimensional" features- such as the Grail Castle appearing and disappearing from various "places" at various "times." This mutual effect of one "world" upon another is reflected in the very grammar of the Celtic languages wherein one word, when juxtaposed to another for a specific grarnrnatical, syntactic and semantic purpose, will cause the latter word to change its shape (sound). For example the Irish word for "cow" is bo, and the word for "white" is ban, but to say "a white cow," one must say, or write, bo bhan [pron. boh-vawn].

6. "Satirizing"
By the use of words - of poetry - the fili("master poets") were able to cause physical changes in the bodies of other individuals. This was done with "satire." The fact that satirical verse has a patently humorous aspect is the essentially Celtic dimension here. Because Celtic kings could not rule if they suffered any physical defect or blemish, all the satirists had to do in order to depose a king was to, by means of a satirical verse, raise boils on his face. All would see the blemish, and his rule would be at an end.

7. Operative Fasting
Fasting for "spiritual" reasons is familiar throughout the world. To fast-really to starve the body - in order to make subjective changes is obvious. Celtic magicians could, however, "fast on" their enemies as an operative curse formula. By starving himself to near death the sorcerer can actually cause the death of his enemy. This technique is something entirely different from, though apparently related to, the use of fasting as a way to "protest" supposed injustices. This latter technique works only through the medium of information in the context of public morality, whereas the operative fasting of the ancient Celtic magicians worked in a mysterious way.

8. Magical Taboos
Again "taboos" - negative prohibitions against certain behaviours-- and other behavioural sanctions are familiar in most religious traditions. The Irish gess [pron. gaysh] (plural gessa) is most often translated something like "taboo." It is, however, something quite different from what is usually meant by this word. A gess, although usually a prohibition against behaviour, actually provides power to the individual. The more gessa that have been "put on" a person (usually by a sorcerer) the more danger recipients live with- but also the more power recipients have at their disposal. To have a gess is both a curse and a boon simultaneously.

Magical Monday: Limits to Magic

In any given fantasy magical system, a person must have limits to his magical abilities, or the story has no conflict: the magic can overwhelm the other side. Conflict is imperative to keep your storyline moving forward.

One of the most common techniques used in the fantasy genre is limiting the amount of magical ability available to your characters. In The Magic Goes Away, Larry Niven made it a factor of environment: once the mana is exhausted in an area, no one can use magic - innately magical beings, such as centaurs, die or lose their magical aspects, and magical creatures who have transformed into their magical state, such as werewolves, revert to a non-magical wolf state.

A more common use is that a person can only cast so many spells, or use an ability so many times, in a day, or use a measured amount of magic. This is the most common use in role-playing games, where the rules rigorously define them. Similarly, in Robert Jordan's popular series, The Wheel of Time, the One Power is limitless but each individual user can only channel a limited amount of it at any one time.

An alternative form of magical limitation provides theoretically unlimited power, but restricts what a user can do to what that user is capable of imagining, comprehending and understanding. In this scenario, magical ability may often be increased through scientific study of the world in order to better understand its working, something observed in The Belgariad by David Eddings. In Earthsea, magic is limited by a balance factor which requires the user to take into account the consequences and effects of what he does; a student of the arts soon finds out that the proper way to use magic is to do only what he must do.

Powers can also be restricted to a certain kind of ability. This is more common for innately magical beings than for those who have learned it. The person can be rendered defenseless by a situation to which his powers do not apply. For instance, if one is inside or underground the power to manipulate the weather is relatively useless.

Magic can also require various sacrifices. Blood or life can be required, and even if the magician has no scruples, obtaining the material may be difficult. Harmless substances can also limit the magician if they are rare, such as gemstones.

The need for learning may also limit what spells a wizard knows, and can cast. When magic is learned from rare and exotic books, the wizard's ability can be limited, temporarily, by his access to these books. In Earthsea, the changing of names weakens wizards as they travel; they must learn the true names of things in their new location to be powerful again.

Yet another theory of magic is that the spells take the same amount of energy needed for the resault of the spell is also taken from the caster, such as in the Inheritance Cycle. Depending on how strong or advanced the spell is compared to the caster, the spell can cause weakness, fainting, or even death. Christopher Paolini says in the book Eragon magic is limited by the energy of your body.

Magic may also be limited not so much inherently as by its danger. If a powerful spell can cause equally grave harm if miscast, wizards are likely to be wary of using it. One example of this is Jack Vance's The Dying Earth novels, in which even one little slip of the tongue in reciting one the vocal elements (called "pervulsions" in the novels) of the incantations of the spells could dramatically change the effect from the desired outcome. In the case of Cugel the Clever, he finds himself seized in the claws of a demon, and carried thousands of miles across an impassable sea to a place where he tried to escape from earlier in the story.

Many characters that work with magic are limited to using wands or staffs (as mentioned above). Harry Potter is, as well as the wizards in Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede.

The Day After Christmas Lament

Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house,
every creature was sleeping, even the mouse.

The toys were all broken, their batteries dead,
Santa passed out with some ice on his head.

I sprang from the sink to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

tore open the curtains and threw up the sash.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a little white truck with an oversize mirror.

With a handful of bills, he grinned like a fox,
then quickly stuffed them into our box.

Magic in fiction is the endowing of fictional characters or objects with magical powers. This often serves as a plot device – the source of the magical artifacts and the quests involved in saving a person or place. Magic has long been a component of fantasy fiction. It was a mainstay from the days of Homer through the fanciful tales of the Holy Grail. These are familiar themes with the popular work of Edmund Spenser (The Fairie Queene) and more contemporary authors such as JRR Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and CS Lewis (the tales from the land of Narnia in such works as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), and of course, JK Rowling (Harry Potter Series).

Historically, many writers who have written about fictional magicians have believed (and brought that belief to their readers) that such magic is possible. Think of classics like William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the Weird Sisters, and wizards like Prospero (The Tempest) and Doctor Faustus in Christopher Marlowe’s play where the characters are considered to be real. In more contemporary work, however, readers and writers usually deal with magic as imaginary and take inspiration from the classics when developing their characters and plot devices in combination with the invention and imagination of the writer. Furthermore, when the writer combines non-fictional beliefs and practices the effects strengthen the rules of magic which will often lead to what the writer requires for moving his plot forward. Fictional magic may or may not involve a detailed system (although when these rules are spelled out craftily – not dumped upon the reader – it strengthens the ability of the reader to believe this magic, will, in fact do what the writer is designing it to do, When the rules are not created, it is more likely that the magic will be used at the author’s convenience for moving the story and be less believable, but still entertaining.

It is not unusual for specific locales in a story to be fraught with magical qualities all its own. This often serves as a conduit to amplify the magical abilities and attributes within the boundaries of this magical zone. This plot element is often used to strengthen the tension in the story because these areas are typically filled with the darker elements and ominous ways of amplifying the darker elements of the story. This can be a useful element for a writer as long as you remember to think outside the box – if everything that happens here is predictable and foreseeable, you will lose both the tension you seek to build and your reader’s attention. Remember to rely on your worldbuilding skills to throw a twist or two into the plot to keep your readers on the edge of their seats and scratching their heads in amazement of how your characters beat the odds and escaped to continue the quest.

There are powerful forces at work throughout nature, some powerful enough to change destiny.

Many people today have heard about the mysterious megalith Stonehenge, the legend of King Arthur and his magician Merlin. But few realize that this is part of the Celtic heritage.

The Celts inhabited a vast area of modern day Europe and the British isles. Their priests were called Druids, but they were not only priests but also judges, astronomers, healers, fortune-tellers and magicians. The word 'druid' itself is etymologically related to the trees, which were said to possess unusual power. The magic of the Druids is nature based, it includes the four elements, the power of trees and forests, the animals.

Using their millennial knowledge of nature, the Celtic magicians created complex magical structures, where the powers of trees, nature and space combined in one. The most unique part of their art skill is the Runic magic. The Runes are Scandinavian script characters, dating from the 2nd century A. D. and according to the legends god Odin gave them to the people. The Runes themselves, as well as the other symbols used in the Celtic magic, are projections of complex multi-dimensional structures. With their help corrections in time and space are made.

The rituals of the Celtic priests consisted mainly of spells, preparation of various magical amulets and attracting of the natural elements for battle victories or rich crops. Among the different methods for predicting the future, the Celts most often used the Runic fortune-telling, called Runemal. The Celtic idea of fortune was extraordinary, they thought that fortune is an endless, long, white linen, where Runes are embroidered and determine destiny. The fundamental changes of fortune were made with the supreme magic of the Druids, called Gold Celtic Magic.

The Gold Celtic Magic invoked the forces of nature and led to corrections of events, playing an important role in the individual's life path. A number of Runes and other symbols were written with the purpose of changing the destiny in the desired direction.

Magical Objects

It is not unusual in a fantasy story to have a powerful artifact or magical object that is so potent it can defeat the hero, or allow the villain to conquer the world. The hero will then find himself on a quest to either obtain or destroy this formidable item.

A very popular example of this type of plot is the epic tale of The Lord of the Rings. The One Ring is an Artifact that appears as the pivotal plot element in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth Tolkien's legendarium. It is described in an earlier story, The Hobbit , as a magic ring of invisibility an ominous magical entity.

Lesser magical objects which do not affect or determine the plot are also common. These items allow characters to have access to magical abilities they need to successfully complete their quest. Fantasy is filled with magical objects. For example, besides the One Ring, The Lord of the Rings contained magic swords that did not determine the plot. Other famous magical objects include the invisibility cloak in Harry Potter, and an array of magical items from Arabian Nights, including a magical flying carpet.

Magical items can be created by magicians or powerful beings as a demonstration of their supernatural capabilities, or the items can originate in the past, with no such items being possible at the present time in the story. The more clearly these items can be described by the author, the more believable they will be to the reader. And when the reader believes in the capabilities of these wondrous objects the magic has truly been achieved.

The first magical wand appeared in the Odyssey where Circe's father used it to transform Odysseus's men into animals. Italian fairy tales put them into the hands of the powerful fairies by the late Middle Ages. These were transmitted to modern fantasy. As you may recall, Gandalf
Gandalf refused to surrender his staff in The Lord of the Rings, but the staff was not merely an aid to help an 'old man walk' as he explained its purpose to the guards, but was used to channel the wizard’s magical abilities and break Saruman's power. Magical wands are used from Andre Norton's Witch World, to Harry Potter.

One element of the wand is the need to limit a wizard, so that opposition to him (necessary for a story) is feasible; if the wizard loses his staff or wand (or other magic item on which he is dependent), he is weakened if not magically helpless. In the wizarding world of Harry Potter
a wizard can only perform weak and uncontrolled magic without a wand. The strengths and limitations of the magical artifacts are revealed as the author’s story unfolds.

Think about the fantasy story within you waiting to be revealed. Open the doors to your own magical realm and let the fantasy unfold. Where will your imagination lead your awaiting readers?
